Secondary school teachers learnt more about the EU

On Wednesday, 28 October a professional development day for upper secondary school social science teachers took place at Oscarsteatern in Stockholm. Minister for EU Affairs Cecilia Malmström opened the day, which aimed to provide information about how teachers can work with EU issues in the classroom, what materials are available and the best way to use these materials in lessons.

Björn Flintberg, GR Utbildning, and Angela Andersson, International Programme Office for Education and Training, began by talking about the day’s speakers and the International Programme Office’s funding to promote the mobility of Swedish teachers and pupils and to support collaborations between Swedish school classes and school classes in the rest of Europe.

Many question to EU Affairs Minister
Cecilia Malmström, who has herself been a researcher and a teacher, spoke about the Swedish Presidency and its priorities, and then fired off answers to the teacher’s questions. There were questions about the status of the Lisbon Treaty, the EU's unity on the issue of climate change, the possibility to exclude Member States who do not respect human rights, and EU enlargement. The morning then continued with information about how the work on climate change in the EU.
The afternoon offered information on how EU material can be used in the classroom, with representatives from the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company and the EU Information Office at the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament).

Eighteen training opportunities
The International Programme Office is organising a total of 18 professional development days around Sweden during the Swedish Presidency, within the context of a cooperation agreement between the Swedish Government, the European Commission and the European Parliament. There are four chances left this year – in Linköping, Uppsala, Umeå and Östersund.

Keep an eye out for the Presidency!

Informal ministerial meetings will be held in seven different locations. There will also be a variety of activities for local residents, such as seminars, exhibitions and readings by authors. These activities will be on the themes of climate change and the Baltic Sea Strategy, both key issues during the Presidency.
