Informal European Council on new top jobs

On 19 November Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will chair an extra informal summit in Brussels. The purpose of the summit is to reach a decision on who will be given the new EU posts that will be created with the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty on 1 December.

Recently Fredrik Reinfeldt has rung round to the other 26 EU heads of state and government to consult them on who should get the new top EU jobs. At the informal summit, which will take the form of a working dinner, it is hoped that an agreement can be reached on who will get the three jobs. These are a permanent President of the European Council, a High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and a Secretary-General of the Council Secretariat.
