Journalist prize for report on fraud after earthquake

This year’s Natali Grand Prize for journalists working for human rights, democracy and development went to Yee-Chong Lee from China. The winning investigative report ‘The Sichuan earthquake - One year on’ is about how inadequate building materials are being used to rebuild the area destroyed in last year's earthquake. There are for example bricks that crumble between your fingers and cannot withstand pressure.

“This is a confirmation for the parents that the world knows what is happening in Sichuan. With this story I want to remind my country that there are poor constructions. Can we save our children as soon as possible? We do not know when the next earthquake will strike”, said a visibly moved Yee-Chong Lee as he accepted the Prize.

The prize ceremony took place during the European Development Days in Stockholm. The prize was created by the European Commission in memory of Lorenzo Natali, former Vice President of the European Commission. The jury, which consists of journalists and representatives from non-governmental organisations, has chosen the winner from over 1000 journalists in 133 countries.
