About Young Reporters

When Sweden holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU from 1 July to 31 December 2009, we will be assisted by upper secondary school pupils (aged 16-18) who will produce written reports, photographs or films from the EU meetings in the seven counties where informal ministerial meetings are being held. These counties are Jämtland County, Jönköping County, Kronoberg County, Skåne County, Stockholm County, Västerbotten County and Västra Götaland County.

What is Young Reporters?

Young Reporters is a school project within the framework of the Presidency’s information and dialogue activities. The reporters are pupils in the first or second year at an upper secondary school in one of the seven counties listed above. The pupils will work under the same conditions as other media. During the spring, the pupils have applied to be young reporters on the basis of specific selection criteria and they have been selected by the Secretariat for Communication EU 2009, which is responsible for the project.

Covering the EU meetings and information activities

The young reporters will be at the centre of events and will get to follow the Swedish Presidency at close hand. They will first and foremost cover the informal ministerial meetings in their home county, but will also report from information and dialogue activities. Informal ministerial meetings are taking place in Göteborg, Jönköping, Malmö, Stockholm, Växjö, Umeå and Åre.

How does it work?

The pupils will write, photograph, and film. Their contributions will be published here on the Presidency website between 1 June and 31 December 2009. Some articles and pictures may even be published in printed documentation from the Young Reporters project.

The school’s responsibility

It will be the school that assumes responsibility for the pupils while they are taking part in the Young Reporters project. This also applies to the part of the project that is carried out at weekends and during the school summer holidays. Participation is to be seen as part of the school’s activity.
