Transport, Telecommunications and Energy
A transport policy for the future
Better logistics and the introduction of new technological solutions are key tools and the presidency will accord priority to the implementation of the Intelligent Transport Systems and Services Action Plan. Efficient logistics presuppose competitive maritime and rail transport systems. Railway and shipping services will be developed on the basis of proposals for a European rail network for competitive freight and a European maritime transport area without borders. The presidency will actively pursue ongoing work in this sphere.
Work continues on legislation of passenger rights and the presidency will aim for agreements on directives on bus and sea passengers. The development of Galileo, the European satellite navigation system, is proceeding according to plan.
The transport ministers will be addressing issues relating to maritime motorways, green corridors, the trans-European transport network TEN-T, quality shipping, airspace blocs and improved traffic safety in the Baltic Sea region as part of the implementation of the Baltic Sea Strategy.
Renewable energy, air travel and mobile telecommunications
This Council meets at least four times a year. Which ministers meet depends on what topics are on the agenda. These could, for example, be traffic safety, mobile phone roaming charges or EU oil imports. During Sweden’s Presidency, two additional informal meetings will be held, in Åre and in Malmö, for the ministers responsible for energy issues and e government respectively.
