Meet the Chairman

During its six months in the EU driving seat, Sweden will chair over 3 000 meetings. Everything from summits with heads of state and government to expert talks on very specific topics – all with the aim of reconciling the views of the EU’s 27 Member States and moving EU cooperation forward. Here you can read interviews with the men and women who are chairing the meetings.

Meet the Chairman: Peace and Security always in focus for the UN

Anders Lidén is the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN in New York. During the Swedish EU presidency he is the chair of the Head of Mission group with the ambassadors from all 27 EU countries together with the ambassadors for the EU commission and the EU council. The group meets every week during the Presidency, both for regular meetings and for special strategic meetings, when UN negotiations need to be resolved or for meetings with other countries.

Meet the Chair: Intensive work to increase protection for experimental animals

On 14–16 December, the agriculture ministers will discuss a proposal for a new directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. The proposal aims to both harmonise legislation, i.e. to coordinate legislation in the Member States, and strengthen protection for experimental animals.

Fish are one of the world’s most important natural resources, but also one of the most vulnerable. Over a billion people are dependent on fish as a source of food. On 14 December the EU fisheries ministers meet in Brussels to begin negotiations on next year’s fishing quotas. Ahead of the Council meeting, se2009.eu exchanged a few words with Robin Rosenkranz. He is Chair of the Working Party on Fisheries Policy and has worked on the preparations for the ministers’ negotiations.

Meet the Chairman: With better and more effective financial supervision in mind

On Wednesday, the EU’s ministers for finance reached an agreement on a new financial supervision structure. After negotiations in the Council, the finance ministers reached an agreement to establish three new supervisory authorities for banking, insurance and securities markets. Paulina Dejmek is Finance Attaché at the Swedish Permanent Representation in Brussels and she has chaired the negotiations in the Council together with colleagues from the Ministry of Finance.

Hans Nilsagård is an executive officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and is one of several officials who will be taking part in the climate change conference in Copenhagen in December. “My task is to ensure that the 27 EU Member States always take a common position and that it is communicated to the rest of the world."
