The EU Member States take it in turns to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Presidency rotates on a half-yearly basis. Sweden holds the Presidency from 1 July to 31 December 2009. Over six months, the Swedish Government will be responsible for moving the EU’s work forward.
