EU-South Africa Summit (troika)
In his capacity as President of the Council of the European Union, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will take part in the EU-South Africa Summit in Cape Town on 11 September.
In light of the many common values, mutual interests and the importance the country has regionally, on the African continent and in international contexts, South Africa is a very important dialogue and cooperation partner to the EU. For this reason, in 2006 the EU and South Africa entered into a strategic partnership, which emphasises the importance of political dialogue with regular summits. The strategic partnership is regulated by the joint action plan adopted at the Ministerial Troika meeting between South Africa and the EU in Brussels in May 2007.
The first summit was held in Bordeaux, France on 25 July 2008. South Africa will host this year’s summit in Cape Town, which is the second of its kind. Topics expected to be focused on at the summit include climate change, the global economic and financial crisis, and peace and security issues.
The summit will be preceded by a ministerial meeting the same morning.
