Aarhus Convention, WGP 11

The overarching aim of the Aarhus Convention, or the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters, is to protect the right of every person to live in an environment adequate to his or her health and well-being by recognising the rights established in the convention. These rights concern the right to have access to information, the right to participate in decision-making processes and the right to have access to justice in environmental matters. Environmental organisations are also afforded these rights in the Aarhus Convention.

The convention has been signed by all the EU Member States and by the European Community. Sweden, along with most other Member States and the Community, has also ratified the convention. Regular meetings of the parties are held, at which implementation of the convention is monitored. Work is also pursued in a special working group for the parties to the convention. It is this working group that will now hold its 11th meeting in July. The meeting agenda includes issues relating to public participation in environmental processes, the reporting requirements of the convention and a communication strategy.
