Presidency Statement on the presidential and parliamentary elections in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region

The Presidency of the European Union congratulates the people of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region on the holding of regional presidential and parliamentary elections on July 25. EU representatives followed electoral proceedings at polling stations across the region as well as through a long-term electoral experts' mission.

A preliminary assessment shows that the elections were held in a relatively competitive environment and were carried out in a secure manner. The high voter turnout, preliminarily 78.5 %, shows the commitment of the voters to express their political will in a democratic way. The EU has taken note of, and will continue to closely analyse a number of reports of alleged irregularities during the election process.

The Presidency recognises the important role of the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq (IHEC) and the significant advisory work of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The Presidency reaffirms the EU’s commitment to supporting democracy in a unified Iraq and its call for political progress on disputed internal boundaries and other issues causing tension. Willingness to compromise from all parties is necessary in order to achieve long-lasting stability and prosperity.
