"Sweden has played an important part in the work to develop a Baltic Sea Strategy. It is therefore positive that the Commission's proposal is so close to Sweden’s contributions”, says Minister for EU Affairs Cecilia Malmström.

The primary aim of the EU Baltic Sea Strategy is to create closer links between the countries and the over 100 million people who live in the region. The EU Baltic Sea Strategy is a macro-regional strategy that aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment, increase competitiveness and accessibility, as well as helping to make the Baltic region more secure.

“The Baltic Sea Strategy is one of the issues to which Sweden will give priority during its Presidency. Our ambition is that the strategy should be adopted at the European Council meeting in October this year”, says Cecilia Malmström.

“It is our firm belief that the strategy is an important instrument in the fight for a cleaner Baltic Sea and a competitive Baltic region”, concludes Cecilia Malmström.
