The conference covered several areas. One point of the agenda was to discuss the future of the common frame of reference focusing on the political way forward. Another theme was to look more closely into the possible contents of the political common frame of reference.
Officials from the institutions of the EU and the public administrations of the Member States, academics and others – altogether about 160 persons – attended the conference.
The conference was organized by the Swedish Ministry of Justice together with the Stockholm Centre for Commercial Law (SCCL) at the University of Stockholm.
Background
The project to establish a Common Frame of Reference in the area of European contract law has been going on for several years. The aim of the project is to improve the quality of the acqui in the area of contract law, inter alia through common principles and definitions. The idea is that the Common Frame of Reference will function as a “toolbox” when further harmonisation or revision of the acqui is made.

Regardless of the outcome of the forthcoming political discussions, this project will be important for all future revision of the acquis and further harmonisation measures in the area of contract law. In order to continue these important discussions, the Swedish Presidency is arranging an official conference on a Common Frame of Reference for European Contract Law.
